You never know what you will find at the NAB Show, and this year’s extravaganza didn’t disappoint.
Consider the friendly woman I met at the Women in Technology reception with a baby stroller. It might be a little unusual to find a baby at NAB, but what the heck, there’s nothing strange about a mother and her baby being together.
Where things began to go off the rails was when one of my associates at TVNewsCheck mouthed the words, “There’s a cat in the baby stroller.”
Of course, all of this happened while Dr. Glodina Connan-Lostanlen, chief marketing officer at Imagine Communications, was making a heartfelt, emotional speech after receiving TVNewsCheck’s 2017 Women in Technology Leadership Award.
But I can report I successfully focused on the speech and resisted the urge to look inside the stroller.
As soon as the festivities were over, however, I definitely had to see the stroller cat for myself. Eventually, I even took a picture of the cat to document its presence at NAB. (The quality isn’t great because the stroller webbing obstructed a clear view inside the carriage.)
Turns out the cat is a service animal and specializes in warning of impending seizures, the owner told me after the event.
Apparently, the authorities in charge of the Las Vegas Convention Center initially tried to bar her from entering the facility with the cat. But after learning the cat was a service animal, they relented.
However, there would be no stroller allowed inside they told her, she reported.
Naturally, the woman agreed, put the cat on a leash and began to walk it inside the LVCC. Needless to say, it didn’t take them long till they changed their minds and allowed the stroller and the cat inside the convention center, she said.
How I wish I would have seen someone walking a cat on a leash down an aisle at NAB. That’s something that would make all of running around, the crowded show floor, the early mornings and the late nights at the NAB Show worthwhile.
