WPBF, the Hearst ABC affiliate in West Palm Beach, Fla., has completed a production control room and technical core upgrade in a new engineering wing that allows it to broadcast its signal at full high-definition resolution.
The station upgrade also includes new engineering offices and a more powerful HVAC system for all engineering operations.
Completed through a phased approach without disrupting on-air broadcasts, the WPBF facility upgrade was overseen by BeckTV, a Denver-based systems integrator. The upgrade includes new rack systems and a re-designed electrical distribution system that supports the heavier current loads required by an IT broadcast infrastructure.
BeckTV custom-built the control room cabinetry and moved noisy equipment away from operational environments.
Cliff Thomas, chief engineer at WPBF, said the new facility is future-proof and will withstand the test of time. He said the construction was completely on budget and on schedule.
“The planning started more than a year before the project started,” Thomas said. “BeckTV engineers sat down with us, went over our existing workflow, detailed the facility we were using and then worked out our transition from old to new equipment, as well as the changes that would take place in our day-to-day workflow. The process was nearly painless.”
