A big coup for Front Porch Digital, the specialist in moving videotape archives to digital files.
T3Media, a major cloud-based video management and licensing services firm, has chosen Front Porch Digital’s SAMMA migration system to digitize the videotape collection of the Department of Defense (DOD) dating back to World War II.
The collection is managed within the DOD by the Defense Imagery Management Operations Center (DIMOC). It contains a wide range of videotape formats including Betacam, VHS and U-matic. T3Media will use a seven-stream SAMMArobot in its workflow to enable automated, high-throughput migration of the Betacam material.
Besides being able to produce multiple digital file recordings from seven videotape recorders simultaneously, SAMMArobot can monitor and improve the video signal at the same time — all while generating associated technical metadata for every stage of the migration.
It can also interface with T3Media’s existing platform, retrieve the information generated during the migration process and guarantee the creation of open video formats and interoperable technical metadata.
The contract is a major one for Front Porch Digital, a 10-year veteran of migrating to digital file-based workflows. The company’s services fall under three categories: migrate, manage and market. Any can be used separately or together.
On the migrate side, the part being used on the DOD project, SAMMArobot and SAMMAsolo products take content from videotape into the digital environment using an automated workflow that’s been tested and proven in high profile installations.
DIVArchive and DIVAdirector are used to manage assets, while distributing content throughout the organization to the key systems and platforms.
For market, DIVApublish automates the creation of frame-based, searchable metadata for each asset. This “metadata map” offers detailed content insight into the media. DIVApublish also provides complete online distribution, scheduling and in-depth analytics.
