Ensemble Designs has a new compact router that could find its way into small newsgathering trucks, mobile weather vehicles and helicopters.
The BrightEye Compact Router, which includes illuminated front panel buttons and an interactive LCD display, allows for 3G, HD and SD video routing and clean switching between video and embedded audio. It has 11 BNC connectors that can be used as either inputs or outputs, in addition to two SFP (small format pluggables) that can be used for additional inputs or outputs — fiber optic or electrical.
The router was on display at NAB last week. Switching between video sources is as easy as hitting an assigned button once then hitting the confirmation button. The clean switch appeared seamless in the demonstration.
This router could make its way into smaller SUVs as electronic newsgathering moves from big microwave and satellite trucks.
It’s expected to be available this fall for $4,400. It’ll come with a five year warranty and free software upgrades.
